Ruby Gundrum, 17, made Galveston College history when she graduated this month with an associate’s degree in General Studies. Gundrum, who attributed her achievement to determination, planning and a passion for learning, graduated from the college beforefi nishing Ball High School, making her the college’s earliest dual-credit graduate.

Congratulations to Karina Pedroza and Taylor Albert for winning First Place and Second Place respectively at the Club level of the Optimist International Essay Scholarship Competition.

Karina and Taylor both won a monetary Scholarship and were awarded Olympic Style Medallions and Certificates for their participation.

Nearly 1,700 magnet school teachers, principals, and administrators from all corners of the country participated in the Magnet Schools of America (MSA) annual national conference in New York City. GISD was well-represented.

Ball High’s 400C team did the best that they have done in about seven years, scoring the 2 nd highest skills score in their division.

Of the 27 Ball High choir students who participated in UIL Solo and Ensemble contest, 19 received Superior ratings and will advance to State.

This will be the largest number of Ball High Musicians headed to State UIL Solo and Ensemble in decades.

Ball High School Tor volleyball seniors Kate Lindamood and Chloe Stein were named to the AVCA Best and Brightest 1st Team for having a 4.3 weighted GPA or higher. They were 2 of only 700 athletes nationwide to receive this honor.

Alexander Alfaro just met all the requirements to graduate from Galveston ISD’s AIM College and Career Preparatory School, and he’s going to walk the stage and receive his high school diploma during January’s commencement ceremony. He’ll be the first in his family to do so.

In November 2021, after months of meetings, Galveston community members recommended to GISD’s Board of Trustees a new middle school alignment in an effort to unify students within their grade levels and designate specific campuses to grade-level specific initiatives.

The Board approved, and in 2022 the three middle schools - then Collegiate, Central, and Austin - were reorganized into a 5th-grade campus that now exists at Weis, a 6th-grade campus at Austin, and a combined 7th and 8th-grade campus at Central.
