In March 2021, after a years-long legal fight, Texas Governor Greg Abbott successfully blocked patients enrolled in Medicaid from accessing healthcare at Planned Parenthood health centers in Texas. This ruling meant that the very communities already facing systemic discrimination, greater barriers to care, and disparately worse health outcomes have also lost their freedom to choose the healthcare provider that best serves their needs. Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas will continue to seek every opportunity to restore and expand access to healthcare for all Texans.
Texas Governor Abbott led an effort to prevent patients from using their Medicaid coverage to pay for services at Planned Parenthood health centers in Texas.
Unfortunately, patients enrolled in Medicaid are blocked from using their Medicaid coverage to pay for essential health care—like cancer screenings, HIV testing, and birth control—at Planned Parenthood health centers during a global health pandemic. We are advocating for the rights of patients enrolled in Medicaid to receive healthcare at their provider of choice and are committed to restoring healthcare appointments to serve you.
20161208_us_statesAre you a Medicaid patient who’s relied on Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas for your health care? Has Planned Parenthood impacted your life in any way? If you’re comfortable, we would love to hear from you.
Tell Texas Governor Greg Abbott to stop blocking care for Medicaid patients at Planned Parenthood—people need more access to health care during a pandemic, not less.
A recent court decision follows years of attempts by politicians to restrict patients from accessing care at Planned Parenthood.
We take pride in being a trusted health care provider for all people, and we follow the highest medical standards. This ruling means that the very communities already facing systemic discrimination, greater barriers to care, and disparately worse health outcomes will now also lose their freedom to choose the health care provider that best serves their needs.
"While bearing the health and financial consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, low-income Texans again face unnecessary, politically-motivated barriers to essential healthcare. Texans need and deserve increased access to healthcare, not less, particularly during an extended pandemic. And Texans, no matter their zip code or income level, have the right to choose their healthcare provider. For decades, the choice of thousands of Medicaid patients has been the trusted, expert care at Planned Parenthood."
